Negotiation Skills for Scientists

Mindset and tools for lasting partnerships.

Who this Course is for

This workshop develops your negotiation skills for both professional and personal success. You will learn to recognise different interaction styles, build interest-based relationships, and master the complete negotiation process. Through practical exercises in a risk-free environment, you gain expertise in preparation techniques, goal-setting, communication strategies, and learn how to create clear proposals that explain what you are offering and what you want in return. The program emphasises hands-on practice to improve efficiency, time management, and collaborative partnership building.

Style of this Course

This three-day, highly interactive workshop is delivered live on Zoom and is structured to maximise learning and retention.

The sessions are spaced out (with a one-week break after Day 1 and about a month break after Day 2) to give participants the necessary time to practice and reflect on the material without it being too intensive.

Schedule: All three days run from 09:00 – 17:00 (CET/CEST). When you book, please double-check that you can attend all three dates for your course.

The course is practical and includes case studies, role play, group work, and discussion sessions, ensuring participants acquire tools that are readily applicable in daily life.

What you will learn

Day 1 Part one: Mindset & roadmap

On the first day, we cover negotiation fundamentals through a progressive approach, starting with core concepts and moving into practical application. We examine negotiation as both a mindset and structured process, introducing five key steps and essential prerequisites. You learn to conduct thorough contextual analysis to understand the broader situation, followed by detailed goal preparation and creating negotiation roadmaps. These concepts are then applied through an interactive case study to reinforce learning.

Topics Covered

Mindset | Contextual analysis | Goals | Strategic planning

Day 2 Part one: Scenarios & Communication

About a week later, on the second day of the workshop, you will focus on improving your negotiation communication skills through personal situation analysis, encounter strategies, and building a communication toolbox. The day also includes guidance on structured meeting techniques, verbal and non-verbal communication, and practical role-play exercises to apply what you have learned.

Topics Covered

Communication & tools | Structured encounters | Collaborative approach

Day 3 Part two: Debrief & Implementation

About a month later to allow time for practice. This follow-up begins with a debrief on individual roadmaps and reflections on the specific changes implemented. It then delves into strategies for building, presenting, and refining offers, concluding with a case study and a role-play exercise focused on practical implementation
